Why Self-Expression Matters

Context is Everything
March 18, 2025I am a scientist at root, so my inquiry is always in the realm of seeking understanding. With that in mind, I am trying to get my head around something quite interesting. It turns out that everything in the universe is a wave form. A good way to illustrate this is to look at magnets. Magnets have an attraction to things away from them. What is known as “action at a distance”. In fact if you put two magnets together, their lines of force summate. The important point is that there is a magnetic field all through space at absolutely every point in space. In other words, there only one magnetic field, or THE magnetic field of the universe.
It turns out that even particle physics is really a conversation about fields. Fields are the lowest level of construction in the universe. The Higgs field is the basis of everything in the universe that we can see, including particles like electrons!
Field theory began with an inquiry of the gravitational field. Newton was the first to consider that the same force that caused an apple to fall to earth, also accounted for the relationship between the planets. That’s the thing. The gravitational field affects ALL of space. Its stronger closer to a large body and weaker the further away you move from that body.
The relationship between magnetism and electricity is also well established, with the electromagnetic spectrum represented by our capacity to see. The visual spectrum, that part of the light spectrum that allows us to see, is really just a small part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Shorter waves, like X-rays, for example are just another part of the electromagnetic spectrum that is invisible to us, along with the ultraviolet spectrum. Interestingly, many insects see in the ultraviolet spectrum.
This is the part that I find hard to process. In quantum field theory, matter arises from fields. Consider that things like electrons arise from fields, This gets a little complicated; force carrying fields create fermions and matter carrying fields create bosons, both are particles. Boson fields can add up together to make up particles or cluster together to make up even larger particles.
“The Higgs is a field that permeates space giving heft to particles like electrons allowing them to form into atoms which bind into molecules. Without the Higgs, there would be no atoms, there would just be a bunch of particles zooming around space molecules” (Sean Carroll).
So what does this have to do with relationship?
First, there is a real attraction between Petra and me. Its as if we are related through the magnetic field, and this is how I described our relationship at first. It felt palpable. But, there is more. When we kiss, we get into an energy zone where it feels like we are tapped into something much more profound, the universe as it were. For me, as I try to make sense of this, it is quite possible that what we are tapping into is the Higgs field. Obviously I cannot prove it, but it sure feels like there is something much bigger than us that we tap into together at times.
It feels quite remarkable to enjoy the experience of feeling as if we are one creature. Not one creature with another, but the two of us seem to occur as one. That is how it feels to each of us at the moment.
The universe is remarkable. Just being alive is remarkable. Being alive and sentient is remarkable. Consciousness is even more remarkable. As I try to grasp what we are experiencing, I do so in the context of this. In a massive universe, life itself is empty and meaningless, and its empty and meaningless that its empty and meaningless. The way to give meaning to my life is for me to make every effort to understand what my love has given me access to, and how the two of us are so completely aligned that we are having these amazing almost out of body experiences together that tie us to the universe at large.
Life for me is an ongoing inquiry.
